She leaned against my shoulder and said, very quietly, “I’m done disappearing.”

That was the real line in the sand.

Not the divorce filing.

After Diana said she was done disappearing, everything got louder for a while.

The event was held in a glass-walled hall overlooking the water. Everyone wore dark suits, expensive dresses, and faces arranged for networking. I wore the only jacket I owned that didn’t smell faintly of sawdust. Diana wore black, simple and sharp, her hair loose, one silver ring on her hand.

She looked calm.

I knew better than to call her fearless.

She was afraid.

Grant entered.

Diana saw him.

Grant approached with a smile.

His voice was smooth.

Familiar in a way that made her shoulders tense.

“Grant.”

He looked at me briefly.

“Ah.” His smile barely changed. “The cottage.”

Diana’s eyes sharpened.

Grant’s eyes flicked around.

The smile disappeared from his eyes.

“You are making yourself look emotional.”

“I am emotional,” she said. “I am also accurate.”

I saw something flash across his face then.

Anger.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

But real.

The mask slipped, and for one second, I understood the house she had escaped.

Then Caleb appeared beside us.

“Dad.”

Grant turned.

“Caleb.”

His tone changed. Warmer. Strategic.

“This is unfortunate.”

Caleb looked at his mother, then at me, then back at Grant.

“No. It’s overdue.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

For the first time that night, he looked genuinely wounded.

Not because he had hurt Diana.

Because his son had said so publicly.

Grant adjusted his cuff.

Then he left.

Diana took her hands.
