When we returned to the reception hall, the room had changed.

Not physically.

The flowers still glowed in low gold light. The band stood awkwardly near their instruments, pretending to adjust sheet music. Candle flames trembled in crystal holders. The scent of peonies, frosting, and red wine still hung in the air.

People knew.

The truth had outrun us down the hallway, as truth tends to do once it no longer belongs to the powerful. Not in a dignified, orderly way. In fragments. Looks. Whispers. Someone telling someone near the bar. A bridesmaid crying in a corner. The venue had been built around a formal garden with climbing roses over stone arches and small lanterns tucked low among box hedges. From inside, through the tall windows, the music resumed uncertainly. The celebration had chosen to continue.

I did not resent that.
Weddings are strange animals. They continue because no one knows what else to do with so much planning once truth tears through the middle.

Lucas and I walked slowly to the parking lot.

His little hand was still in mine.

At the car, I crouched in front of him.

We got into the car.

Clara came first.

She did not sit until I did.

I let her speak.

She admitted she had seen Lucas panic and chosen first to preserve the reception.
Admitted that she had been too conditioned, all her life, to smooth over conflict when older women in a family became forceful.

“I thought staying calm was kindness,” she said quietly. “I think I’ve spent a lot of years confusing the two.”

That was perhaps the wisest thing anyone had said to me in the entire aftermath.

We spoke for almost an hour.

At the end, she asked if she could apologize to Lucas privately, properly, when he was ready.

“Not now,” I said.

She nodded immediately.

She accepted that too.

Thomas took longer.

He came to my apartment three days later carrying flowers I did not invite in and an expression that suggested no amount of sleep had made his own face sit right since the wedding. He stood in my doorway like a man discovering that charm, when stripped of social support, is really just posture.

“I know you don’t want to see me,” he said.

“You’re correct.”

I disagree.

Lucas is older now.
Taller.
Still soft-hearted, though more careful around adults than I wish he had to be.

For a while after the wedding, he asked strange little questions at odd times.

“If someone says I did something and I didn’t, should I say it louder?”
“If a grown-up is wrong, do all the other grown-ups know?”

I answered each one as honestly as I could.

No child should have to become a philosopher of injustice at ten.

He has not seen Monique since that night.

Thomas he has seen twice, both times in public, both times brief, both times under my eye. Clara once, at Lucas’s request, after months had passed and he wanted to know whether she would say the same thing without a wedding at stake. She did. As for me, the wedding changed something final.

In my willingness to romanticize them.
