For a while, they watched snow gather along the curb.

“My wife would have liked you,” Thomas said.

Sarah looked at the bag.

“What was her name?”

“Ellen. She hated bullies. Once threw a dinner roll at a trustee who yelled at a waitress.”

Sarah laughed softly.

“Sounds like someone I would’ve liked.”
